The Story of Maharaja Bali — Sanatan Samvaad
Beloved readers, I, Rishi Sanatan, from your spiritual dialogue “Sanatan Sanvad,” wish to take you today into the flow of that divine saga which acquaints us with the life of Maharaja Bali — his ancestors, his sacrifices, his yajnas, his devotion, and his enduring influence. Today, we will understand how Bali established a unique balance of power, devotion, dharma, and justice, becoming a symbol of glory across the entire world.
King Bali’s ancestor was the devotee Prahlad, whose life was entirely devoted to Vishnu Bhakti and the path of Dharma. Prahlad’s son, Bali’s grandfather Virochak, did not fully follow the path of righteousness and possessed some demonic traits. From this combination of qualities, Bali was born, who from childhood displayed an extraordinary balance of patience, courage, justice, and strength. Despite possessing demonic traits, his heart inclined toward dharma, yajna, and devotion, making him both feared and revered by the gods.
As Bali grew, he took charge as the king of the demons. His reign exemplified a unique balance of dharma, ethics, and devotion. He was not merely a powerful king, but also respected throughout the world for his yajnas and just rule. The welfare of the people was supreme in his kingdom, and power was used solely for the protection of justice and dharma. Bali particularly focused on yajnas and dharma observance; he planned a hundred Rajasuya yajnas in his kingdom, which were not merely symbols of his power and dominion but also a means to establish ideals of dharma and devotion across the world.
As Bali’s empire expanded, fear arose among the gods. Indra, the king of heaven, grew concerned that if Bali ruled over the entire world, the demons would establish dominion over heaven. At this time, Lord Vishnu took the Vaman avatar and appeared at Bali’s yajna as an elderly Brahmin. The Brahmin requested three steps of land from Bali during the yajna. While this seemed a simple request, it symbolized the entire Earth, heaven, and Bali’s complete surrender.
Bali, with his devotion, justice, and commitment to dharma, accepted this request. The Vaman avatar placed the first step on Earth, the second step in heaven, and for the third step, Bali offered himself entirely. In this surrender, Bali’s glory and devotion were revealed. It was not merely the defeat of power, but a symbol of true devotion and complete submission to God. Lord Vishnu granted Bali a boon for his surrender — sovereignty over Patala Loka (the netherworld) and the right to visit annually, which we today celebrate as Balipratipada.
Through his devotion, dharma, and surrender, Bali relinquished power according to God’s will, and in this eternal order, his glory remained established. Similarly, the Kalki avatar will act in the future — when adharma and tyranny increase on Earth, he will restore dharma through his power, justice, and devotion to God, reestablishing righteousness. After the Kalki avatar, he will become the king of heaven.
The story of Maharaja Bali reminds us that the supreme goal in life is not merely power, victory, or empire, but the practice of devotion, dharma, and justice. His influence, his followers, and the ideals he established remain alive in our society, festivals, and religious traditions. The saga of Bali is not only an ancient tale but also a timeless guide and inspiration for the present and future, showing that the balance of power, justice, and devotion is the foundation of true stability and greatness.
